Apple Crumble Recipe

Ingredients: Serves 4

750 g/1lb cooking (tart) apples
75 g/3 oz caster (superfine) sugar

1 whole clove (optional)

30 ml/2 tbsp water
100 g/4 oz/1 cup plain (all-purpose) flour

50 g/2 oz butter or hard block margarine, diced

Method:

Peel, core and slice the apples and place in an ovenproof dish. Sprinkle with 25 g/2 tbsp of the sugar and add the clove, if using, and the water. Put the flour in a bowl and rub in the butter or margarine until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the remaining sugar. Sprinkle over the surface of the apples and press down lightly. Bake in a preheated oven at 180C/350F/gas mark 4 for 40 minutes until the top is crisp and golden brown and the apples are tender.
