Put the bread in a bowl. Add the milk
and leave to soak for 30 minutes. Beat well with a fork. Mix in the
eggs, sugar, spices and fruit. Brush a 1.5 liter/ 2.5 pt/6 cup
ovenproof dish with some of the butter. Turn the mixture into the dish
and level the surface. Drizzle with the remaining butter. Bake in a
preheated oven at 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4 for about 1 hour or until
golden brown and set. Allow to cool slightly, sprinkle with caster
sugar and serve cut into squares with cream or custard.
