Put the sugar, lemon juice and wine in a
saucepan and heat until the sugar dissolves. Cut a thin slice off the
bottom of each pear so it will stand upright and carefully cut out the
cores. Stand the pears in an ovenproof dish and pour the wine over.
Cover with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 160°C/ 325°F/gas mark
3 for 30 minutes, turning once. Serve hot with the wine spooned over,
or cool then chill.
