Real Treacle Pudding Recipe

Ingredients: Serves 6

175 g/6 oz plain (all-purpose) flour
2.5 ml ground ginger
175 g/6 oz/3 cups fresh breadcrumbs

100 g/4 oz/1 cup shredded (chopped) vegetable suet
1 egg, beaten
175 g/6 oz black treacle (molasses)
45 ml/3 tbsp milk
2.5 ml bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
Butter, for greasing
Sweet White Sauce, to serve


Sift the flour and ginger into a bowl. Stir in the breadcrumbs and suet. Add the egg. Warm the treacle and milk in a saucepan. Stir in the bicarbonate of soda. Stir into the dry ingredients to form a soft, dropping consistency. Turn into a 1.25 liter greased pudding basin. Cover with a double thickness of greased greaseproof (waxed) paper or foil, twisting and folding under the rim to secure. Steam for 2.5 hours. Turn out and serve with Sweet White Sauce.
